Why I love a healthy rivalry

Ok so I was never the best athlete, in talent or work ethic, but I did my best with what I had. In highschool I played on the tennis team in the fall, ski club in the winter, and ran track in the spring. I was, however, always a spirited member of the teams I was on. But as a spectator? Forget about it. I was usually the loudest one there, always up for some friendly competition.

Fast forward to becoming a mom, with my kids playing little league baseball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse and on the ski race team… and I was/am in heaven. More cow bell! I already know I am going to look back on these years and miss these moments so much. Watching them play, especially when they struggle then succeed, is one of the best things to witness as a parent in my opinion. I love seeing the connection they make with their team and coaches, and how they lift one another up, and how they celebrate together.

Because I am raising my kids not too far from where I grew up myself, it’s also super fun to watch them play against my old high school rivals (those feelings run deep!) The nostalgia hits differently when I see them face off against teams that I used to compete with back in the day. I can’t help but feel extra fired up and nostalgic when we have games scheduled against those particular schools.

I wanted to create a school spirit blanket to keep in my car for the various kids' games. Living in upstate New York, we have pretty extreme weather. So we will play in rain, snow, wind… all of it.
